Since we’ve been discussing Pat Garrett recently – and will continue doing so for a few more weeks – I thought I’d share an interesting photo.
You’re looking at three generations of Lincoln County Sheriffs.
That’s Garrett sitting down on the left and seated directly next to him is John W. Poe. Not only was Poe with Pat when Billy the Kid was killed, but he’d also go on to replace Garrett as Sheriff.
Standing is James Brent, who also served as Lincoln County Sheriff from 1886 to 1889.
Unfortunately I was unable to find any pictures of Garrett’s other deputy, William “Kip” McKinney.
In case you missed it, we’ve already discussed Pat Garrett’s “origin story” and last week we dived headfirst into the relationship between him and Billy Bonney.
This Wednesday will be a somewhat shorter episode, almost exclusively focused on Pat’s final push into Fort Sumner and his killing of the Kid. By the way, that episode is already available on Into History if you don’t feel like waiting.
Speaking of Into History…
On the off chance you haven’t heard me mention it, Into History is my new venture; a subscription channel of podcasts made by history lovers for history lovers where you’ll gain instant access to hundreds of ad-free history episodes, plus exclusive curated feeds, a weekly newsletter, and a community hub to keep the conversation going after the episodes end.
In addition to ad-free episodes from The Wild West Extravaganza you’ll also gain access to several other history podcasts, including 2 Complicated 4 History, American Elections: Wicked Game, American Revolutions, Cold War Conversations, History That Doesn’t Suck, Her Side of History, History Daily, Shipwrecks and Seadogs, and more!
I’ll also be posting bonus content on Into History that you’ won’t be able to find anywhere else. Matter of fact, my most recent reading of William T. Hamilton’s My Sixty Years on the Plains is already up and available, exclusively on Into History.
So why am I doing this and what makes this different from Patreon?
Simply put, this is my chance to finally begin to earn something akin to a living wage from The Wild West Extravaganza. It may or may not succeed; I don’t know. But I do know I’m going to try. By joining Into History I’ll be able to expose this show to an entire new audience and, hopefully, build build a community of history lovers like me and you.
The main difference between The Wild West Extravaganza Patreon and Into History is the various perks. I’ll continue posting ad-free episodes on Patreon and, for now, Patreon will be the ONLY place you can access my back catalogue (the old stuff from the Bloody Beaver days).
Into History is for the bonus content (also ad free) and the community. Like I said, the latest installment of My Sixty Years is already available (pretty cool story of him going to war with the Shoshone, along with his tips on how to hunt bear), as is next week’s episode on Garrett. I’ve also begun researching an episode on Claude Dallas that will be exclusive to Into History and recorded my first round of historical conversations with the great Garrett Woods from YouTube’s 11 Bang Bang.
There’s a book club on Into History, a Discord server where you can talk to me and the other hosts (there’s a channel exclusively for The Wild West Extravaganza) and in the future we’re going to hold live streaming and pay-per-view events.
In short, it’s going to be pretty damn cool. If you’re interested, the soft-launch sale ends on July 31st.
As of right now, you can get a historic (haha get it?) discount of 50% off your first 3 months. Here’s the link: Into History
Aside from that, I’m no salesman. I know many of you may not be able to financially support The Wild West Extravaganza and that’s perfectly fine. I’m just honored that you’re listening! So whether or not you subscribe to Into History or not, just know that I’m deeply honored to be able to continue bringing you true tales from the wild and wooly west!
Till next week,
Adios!
Thanks Josh! You're doing a great job! Good luck with the new venture! 🤠 I always look forward to your shows! 👍
