The Clements brothers – Mannen, Joe, and Jim – were cousins to the notorious John Wesley Hardin and active participants in the Sutton Taylor feud.
That’s them seated in the front row, pistols at the ready. This photo may have been taken in Abilene, Kansas in 1871 after the boys completed a rather eventful cattle drive.
Just a week before arriving in Abilene, they ran into trouble with another herd. A seventeen-year-old Hardin and his cousin Jim Clements met the challenge head-on. When the smoke cleared six vaqueros lay dead on the banks of the Little Arkansas.
Most of the cowboys would head back to Texas following a celebration in Abilene. Not Hardin, though. He’d stick around long enough for his famous showdown with another legend of the Old West – Wild Bill Hickok.
Episode 1 in a 4 part series on John Wesley Hardin debuted today. If you’re new here you may not know that I also have a podcast. The Wild West Extravaganza covers real-life people and events from the Old West.
