Hello there! If you haven’t already noticed, part 2 in the series on Captain Jack and the Modoc War has been released. Per usual you can find it here or wherever you listen to podcasts.
One thing that struck me when researching this conflict was just how young some of the participants were. For example, here’s Hooker Jim. You may remember him as the Modoc who led their other warriors on that massacre following the Battle of Lost River. Guy looks more like a sulking teen than a hardened killer.
Captain Jack was in his mid 30’s at the time and it appears that the shaman, Curly Headed Doctor (pictured below) was about the same age.
Notice the short hair. This was not from mourning. They were a people stuck between two worlds. They dressed in settler clothing and wore their hair like their homesteading neighbors, while still clinging to many of their old beliefs and customs.
Here’s another interesting photo.
From left to right you have Shacknasty Jim, Hooker Jim again, Steamboat Frank, and finally John Fairchild, a rancher who was sometimes on friendly terms with the tribe.
Just thought I’d share a few photos, just to put things into context. Thank you all so much for continuing to listen to The Wild West Extravaganza! Part 3 - the final installment of Captain Jack and the Modoc War is coming soon!
Adios.
