I recently came across this photo and thought I’d share it with you.
A Crow (Apsaroke) warrior performs a sacred Sun Dance, date unknown.
The Sun Dance was (and is) an important renewal ritual among many Plains tribes, including the Crow.
I won’t pretend to know all the details, but these dances usually involve fasting, sweating, and several days’ worth of dancing and prayer to help induce visions. And yes, those throngs were attached directly to the man’s chest.
Hopefully, you’ll find the photo as fascinating as I did.
UPDATE
Yesterday, a new episode of The Wild West Extravaganza was released. It tells the true story of Richard “Two Gun” Hart, a ballsy cowboy and prohibition agent whose brother just so happened to be the notorious Al Capone!
It’s available now wherever you listen to podcasts, including YouTube!
Wrong text thread but still loved the Two Guns episode
I thought I knew history a bit. Had no idea about Capone’s brother. Really enjoyed listening to this episode. I like all episodes but learned a lot with this one.
